Robert Phelan
Robert was born and raised in Rockville Centre, New York. After a very active childhood of school, athletics and summers on the beaches of Long Island, Robert attended St. Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont. Robert played Varsity Lacrosse while at St. Michael’s and graduated in 1987 with a degree in Business Administration.
Upon completion of his studies, Robert traveled extensively and then began his professional career in 1988 on Wall Street, taking a position as a phone clerk with a Member Firm on the floor of The Commodities Exchange, Inc. Robert spent the next three years in various capacities learning the commodities & futures markets and eventually leased a seat on the floor of the exchange and traded for his own account.
In 1991, Robert joined broker-dealer Citation Financial Group as an Institutional Salesman. In this capacity, Robert interacted daily with large Pension Fund Managers, Mutual Fund Managers, Insurance Companies and Investment Management Firms and advised them on various investment opportunities in the high-yield bond market. In this capacity, Robert originated and developed several key “buy-side” account relationships for the firm.
In 1993, Robert accepted a job offer from Salomon Smith Barney and relocated to Charleston, South Carolina. Sensing an opportunity, Robert focused his business on the then emerging corporate 401(k) retirement plan market and successfully secured the business of a number of large and prominent Charleston employers.
In 2000, Robert joined Kiawah Island Real Estate as a member of the on-site sales team of the master developer of Kiawah Island. Robert initially split his time working with a senior Kiawah sales executive while also developing his own clientele. Robert quickly grasped the luxury resort-residential real estate business and enjoyed several successful years selling Kiawah properties for Kiawah Island Real Estate.
Robert left Kiawah Island Real Estate in 2010 to pursue an opportunity in the property & casualty insurance industry. Robert joined Coastal Plains Insurance, a Hilton Head Island based independent insurance agency, and built a high-net worth personal lines insurance franchise on Kiawah and Seabrook islands as well as in the greater Charleston area.
In 2014, Robert entered into a joint venture with Maury Donnelly & Parr*, a Baltimore, MD based insurance agency to open an office for them in Charleston. Maury Donnelly & Parr and Robert are partnering to grow Robert’s high-net worth personal lines insurance business as well as to pursue other personal and commercial lines insurance opportunities in Charleston.
Robert resides with his son Andrew (17) in Mount Pleasant, SC. Robert is an active member of St. Andrews Church in Mt. Pleasant and devotes a lot of his free time to teaching and coaching youth lacrosse in the Charleston, SC area. Robert is also an avid golfer.
